Nugget Falls

Nugget Falls

Nature, Parks, & Gardens • Juneau, Alaska United States

Nugget Falls, also known as Nugget Falls, cascades dramatically over a backdrop of rugged cliffs right into Mendenhall Lake. This striking waterfall is a result of the melting waters from the Nugget Glacier, contributing to its thunderous roar and misty spray that can be felt even from a distance.

Visiting Experience

The falls are accessible via a well-maintained 2-mile trail that starts from the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. This trail is relatively easy and offers several viewing platforms, providing visitors spectacular views of both the glacier and the falls. The path is lined with informational signs that enhance the experience by detailing the local flora and fauna as well as the geological history of the region.

Seasonal Highlights

During the spring and early summer, Nugget Falls swells with the snowmelt, making this the ideal time to experience its full majesty. The surrounding landscape bursts into life, with wildflowers dotting the terrain and wildlife frequently spotted in the area. In the colder months, the falls can partially freeze, creating a stunning, icy sculpture framed by snow-covered mountains.

Whether you're a photographer looking to capture the interplay of light and water, a family seeking an accessible outdoor adventure, or a nature enthusiast drawn to the sounds and sights of a dynamic waterfall, Nugget Falls offers a memorable visit in the heart of Alaska’s natural beauty.
