Now that the USCG has selected Birmingham as the site if a major training base, learn what makes them uniquely special. A member of the Coast Guard Historical Society will use visual displays to explore their exploits from past-to-present with a special focus on their role in the American Civil War. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.
