The only inner court in Amsterdam with origins dating back to the Middle Ages. It is estimated that it was built by the end of the 14th century. It used to be a home to the beguines (religious women). Today it is a beautiful place of peace and quiet in the very heart of Amsterdam.
You can find there the tall houses which are so typical for Amsterdam but also the oldest wooden house (one of the two still standing) in Amsterdam.
During most of its existence, Begijnhof was surrounded by the canals from all sides with only one entrance. Now, there are several entrances (e.g. from the Spui square).
If you decide to visit the place, bear in mind that it is private property and you should behave quietly and respectfully.
