Jōzankei

Nature, Parks, & Gardens • Sapporo, Hokkaido Japan

Jōzankei is a celebrated hot spring destination within the city limits of Sapporo, offering visitors a serene escape into nature. The area is renowned for its therapeutic hot springs, believed to have healing properties that attract both locals and tourists alike. The valley is enveloped by the lush, verdant landscapes of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, providing a stunning backdrop of seasonal beauty—from the delicate hues of cherry blossoms in spring to the fiery colors of autumn leaves.

Exploring the Natural Beauty

Travelers to Jōzankei can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities that highlight its natural splendor. The Toyohira River, which flows through the heart of Jōzankei, is perfect for leisurely walks along its banks or for more adventurous river activities. During the colder months, the surrounding mountains become ideal for snowshoeing and the nearby ski resorts offer snowy slopes for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

The area is also home to several parks and gardens where one can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the setting. Among these, Futami Park stands out with its suspension bridge and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers. The park's pathways are lined with a variety of trees and shrubs that change colors with the seasons, offering a new experience with each visit.

Thermal Baths and Wellness

Central to the Jōzankei experience are its onsens, or thermal baths, which are scattered throughout the area. These hot springs are a perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking or skiing. Many local hotels and inns offer their own private onsens, with both indoor and outdoor baths that allow you to soak in mineral-rich waters while enjoying views of the natural landscape.
