Goryokaku Park

Nature, Parks, & Gardens • Hakodate, Hokkaido Japan

Goryokaku Park is a star-shaped fortress that has transcended its military origins to become one of Hakodate’s most beautiful and peaceful spots. Designed in the 19th century by Takeda Hisaburo, the park is a prime example of Western-style fort construction. Its unique aerial view, reminiscent of a star, is best appreciated from the Goryokaku Tower, which offers a panoramic perspective of the entire area.

Seasonal Beauty and Historical Significance

In spring, the park transforms into a pink haven with over a thousand cherry trees in full bloom, attracting visitors and locals alike who come to enjoy hanami (flower viewing). The fall brings a vibrant palette of red and gold hues, making it a picturesque spot for leisurely walks and photography.

Aside from its natural allure, Goryokaku Park is steeped in history. It was the last stronghold of the short-lived Republic of Ezo, and today, the park houses the Hakodate City Museum of Photographic History, where visitors can learn about the park's historical context and significance in Japanese history. Walking through the park, visitors will encounter various monuments and plaques that narrate the tales of a bygone era.

Whether it’s a serene stroll, a deep dive into history, or a seasonal spectacle, Goryokaku Park offers a diverse array of attractions that continue to captivate those who wander its expansive grounds.
